C. Scott Omo Honored for Service as President of McLennan County Young Lawyers Association

On May 8, 2015, C. Scott Omo was honored by the McLennan County Young Lawyers Association for his service as President.  Scott was presented with a plaque and was praised for his work in securing two Texas Young Lawyer Association grants, bringing greater organization and structure to the group, and for spearheading the Pro Bono Challenge.

Gena Turner Named Outstanding Mentor by McLennan County Young Lawyers Association

The firm is proud to announce that Geneva Brown “Gena” Turner has been named the Outstanding Mentor of McLennan County for 2015 by the McLennan County Young Lawyers Association.  In her nomination for the award, Gena was praised for her years of nurturing young lawyers as an adjunct professor at Baylor Law School, her mentoring of associates in estate planning and real estate, her compassion for her clients, and her extensive involvement in the community through her service on numerous boards.  Gena retired from Pakis, Giotes, Page & Burleson, P.C. in October 2014.

Marcus received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, summa cum laude, in Finance from Texas A&M University in 2008, and his Juris Doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law in 2012. Marcus’ primary practice areas include Commercial Litigation, Employment Litigation, and Family Law. In his free time, Marcus enjoys drawing, playing ultimate Frisbee, and exploring Waco with his dog, Wendell.

Firm Proud to Support High School Mock Trial Competition

Pakis, Giotes, Page & Burleson, P.C. is proud to support the Region 12 High School Mock Trial Competition. The 2015 competition featured eleven schools from three counties and was held over four days at Baylor Law School and the McLennan County Courthouse.  The competition began Monday, February 9, 2015, and concluded on Thursday, February 12, 2015.

This year ten firm attorneys participated in the annual competition of Central Texas high schools in Education Service Center Region 12. Dave Deaconson served as attorney advisor for Midway High School, the runner-up to the regional champions, Live Oak Classical.  Midway qualified to compete in the state tournament in Dallas in March. Jim Hering served as attorney advisor for McGregor High School. McGregor participated in the competition for the second time this year, narrowly missing the playoffs. Law clerk Hunter Palmer served as attorney advisor for Moody High School. Fred Johnson, Mike Cosby, Scott Omo, Lee Allgood, Carlie Gause, and Marcus Mataga all served as judges in the competition.

Scott Omo is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Estate Planning and Probate Law.   This certification demonstrates his expertise in drafting sophisticated wills and trusts to maximize generational wealth management and represent clients throughout the entire probate and trust administration process.  In addition, Mr. Omo represents clients in guardianship and fiduciary litigation matters.  Scott joins Board Certified firm attorneys Artie Giotes (Estate Planning and Probate Law) and Randy Page (Tax Law).

Jim Hering Honored by Texas Bar Foundation

Jim Hering has been elected to membership in the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation. Fellows of the Foundation are selected for their outstanding professional achievements and their demonstrated commitment to the improvement of the justice system throughout the state of Texas. Election is a mark of distinction and recognition of Mr. Hering’s contributions to the legal profession.

Selection as a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation is restricted to members of the State Bar of Texas. Each year one-third of one percent of State Bar members are invited to become Fellows. Once nominees are selected, they must be elected by the Texas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees. Membership has grown from an initial 254 Charter Fellows in 1965 to more than 8,500 Fellows throughout Texas today.

The Texas Bar Foundation is the largest charitably-funded bar foundation in the country. Founded in 1965 by lawyers determined to assist the public and improve the profession of law, the Texas Bar Foundation has maintained its mission of using the financial contributions of its membership to build a strong justice system for all Texans. Firm Proud to Sponsor Baylor Entrepreneurship Competition

The firm congratulates the winners of Baylor University’s 2014 New Venture Competition. The Baylor New Venture Competition is a two-day, dual-round business plan competition and speed-pitch competition promoting entrepreneurship and small business development. The competition is put on by the John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship in Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business and is open to current students from universities around the country.

This year’s competition took place on February 28 – March 1, 2014. REEcycle from the University of Houston took first place in the competition. Disease Diagnostic Group from Case Western Reserve University and Rollout from the University of Texas at Dallas placed second and third, respectively.

The firm was proud to sponsor the competition and offered legal consultation to each of the top three teams.
